    • A credential substrate rotator (170) includes a substrate support (176), a substrate feeder (206) and a substrate sensor (240). The substrate support is configured to support a substrate (108) in a substrate support plane (178) and rotate about a central axis (184). The substrate feeder is configured to feed a substrate along the substrate support plane. The substrate sensor includes a substrate position indicator (such as pin trigger 264) that is aligned with the central axis and has first and second positions (244 and 246). The first position indicates an absence of a substrate from a predetermined location of the substrate support. The second position indicates a presence of a substrate in the predetermined location of the substrate support. Also disclosed, is a credential substrate processing module (100) that includes a credential substrate rotator (170), a first data encoder (300) and a module controller (162). The credential substrate rotator includes a substrate support (176) configured to support a substrate (108) in a substrate support plane (178) and rotate about a central axis (184), and a substrate feeder (206). The first data encoder is configured to encode data to a substrate presented by the substrate rotator.

    • A printer (30) is provided with a smart card (10) encoding device (13) that is externally accessible. The smart card (10) is a key with an integrated circuit (50) including a memory (10A) that will retain a discrete password and other digital information. The password on the smart card key (10) must be compared to a password stored in the printer memory (30A, 30B) before printing operations will be permitted. The digital information in the smart card key memory (10A) can include marks (122) or graphics that would indicate that the cards being printed (120) by the printer (30) are secured cards and authorized cards. The information will be printed from the smart card key memory (10A) only when the passwords match so that the discrete information on the smart card key (10) can be used for driving the printer (30) for printing this information. The printer (30) is made into a high security printer by permitting overriding of the password only upon the generating of identical numbers from separated algorithms, one in the printer memory (30A) and one at a secure location.

    • A credential manufacturing device (100) includes a card supply (102) positioned adjacent to a main card input (107) and configured to hold a plurality of plastic card substrates (104), a card transport (106), a card processing device (112), an auxiliary input (350) and a card rotator (150). The card transport is configured to feed individual card substrates from the card supply through the main card input and along a processing path (108). The card processing device is either a print head or a laminating roller and is in line with the processing path. The auxiliary input is displaced from the main card input and the processing path, and positioned in line with an auxiliary input path (178D), which is transverse to the processing path. The auxiliary input is configured to receive individual card substrates for travel along the auxiliary input path. The card rotator is configured to rotate individual card substrates to a plurality of indexed angular orientations including a first orientation, in which the card rotator is oriented to the processing path and a second orientation in which the card rotator is oriented to the auxiliary input path.
